A Short Introduction to Corporatese

~Marcus

Corporatese is a widespread form of English among various corporations and organizations. Corporatese is a language that is well worth learning if one is pursuing a position in the corporate world. Below, I'll offer some of the basic lessons of learning Corporatese.

I. "Acronymize" your speech - In Corporatese, one makes great use of acronyms, especially TLAs (three-letter acronyms), like CEO, CIO, CFO, COO, CPO, (all of these being positions) and others like ASAP, BAU, OOO, etc. Try to integrate these into your daily speech.

II. Use the words Corporatese - Some favorites are downsizing, deadline, management, system, state-of-the-art, action, execute, facilitate, generate, implement, simplify, sustainable, and innovative, just to name a few.

III. Use and Build Corporatese phrases - This is where you really get going. For example, if you're in human resources, never fire someone. Instead, start a downsizing employment program, optimize outplacement potential, eliminate redundancy, or suggest employee position termination.

These are just a few lessons on learning Corporatese. In an effort to improve your Corporatese, the best option is probably joining a business corporation where you will interact with other Corporatese-speaking/learning personnel at an average of five days a week. And remember, don't worry if you think you're being fired or layed-off. You're simply being "removed from the staff list during a time of skills mix adjustment and period of negative economic growth".
